Two centuries ago, in 1825, a group of Norwegian farmers had a radical thought: What if we sell everything and start anew in America?
The group came to be known as the Sloopers, and their pathfinder was the enigmatic Cleng Peerson, also known as the father of Norwegian emigration to America. Peerson and the Sloopers knew little about the young nation across the Atlantic and even less about the journey ahead. They feared sea monsters and cannibals lurking on American shores—but what they didn’t fear was the raw fury of the Atlantic during hurricane season. And yet, they set sail in a small, repurposed herring boat.
On this special history night at the Norwegian Club, journalist and historian Fredrik Kalstveit will share the incredible story of the father of Norwegian emigration and the dramatic voyage that included everything from childbirths to shark attacks. Kalstveit is also host of the podcast 200 Norwegians.
As always, our talented chef Paul Roarke will prepare a delicious meal from both land and sea—expect an evening of great food and history!
