Join us for a special night, where we will be treated an exceptional meal prepared by Michelin-starred chef Roberth Sundell. Following that, historian Chris Carlson, a Bay Area legend, will give a presentation. Chris has authored and edited ten significant books, chronicling pivotal historical events. On this night, he will focus on a critical chapter of Norwegian-American history in the Bay Area—the sailors and the Sailors' Union.
His brief presentation will highlight the dramatic events of 1934, when members of the Sailors' Union of the Pacific joined longshoremen and much of San Francisco in a strike against the waterfront employers during the depths of the Great Depression. It's a riveting story that helps explain why San Francisco has earned its reputation as a "labor town," even decades after the heyday of industrial unions. The presentation will feature newsreel footage from the General Strike, oral history clips from someone who lived through it, and reflections on how the legacy of the Big Strike continued to shape the city's politics long after WWII.
