Shanghaiing—meaning to intoxicate and kidnap drunk sailors, or in other ways trick them onboard sailing ships—was commonplace for many years on the waterfront of San Francisco, also known as The Barbary Coast. Several Norwegian seamen fell prey to this practice, but there were also a handful of Norwegian perpetrators. One of them happens to be one of the founding fathers of the Norwegian Club, Mr. John Ferem.
Mark your calendars for March 28th when writer and journalist Fredrik Kalstveir will talk about shanghaiing and John Ferem, AKA Johnny from the Home. The presentation will be loosely based on two articles published in Aftenposten and Adressavisen.
